Endodontic therapy, sometimes referred to as root canal therapy, involves removing the diseased, damaged, or dead pulp from your tooth. The root canal system refers to the area located between each tooth's outer hard layers. Soft dental pulp, which is made up of nerves and blood vessels and helps your tooth grow and develop, is present throughout this system. Your tooth may become abscessed if bacteria (germs) enter through large cavities, fractures, or faulty fillings. Any tooth with an infection in the pulp is said to have an abscess. Pulp must be removed if it becomes diseased. Pain and/or swelling may be brought on by an abscessed tooth. A dental x-ray or other changes to the tooth might alert your dentist to the infection. Your dentist could perform a root canal or suggest that you see an endodontist. A dentist who has successfully completed an academic post-graduate specialization degree in endodontics is an endodontist. The dental pulp, or nerve, of the tooth, is treated in endodontics, a branch of dentistry.
